The Edison Singers 2022Regal, triumphant, nostalgic, spiritual and sentimental…

Our 2023/24 season of concerts spans a vast array of heartfelt musical expressions.

First up is "Royal Splendour" with music that spans everything from Mendelssohn’s song Italien Op.8, No.3, to music from the recent coronation of King Charles III. The program includes a multimedia screenshow of archival images and video.

Handel’s Messiah is a perennial Christmas favourite: a colourful journey of musical highs and lows. However, as in the ending of any great epic, triumph reigns.

But Christmas is often about our yesteryears; looking back, remembering and hearing those carols that you’ve heard all your lives. Old, new, rearranged, tarted up, reflective and humorous. “Tis the Season.” Let’s sing!

On Good Friday, we assume a more sombre cloak of incredible musical faith. Seven Last Words from the Cross by James MacMillan, for string orchestra and choir, is a dramatic powerhouse of brilliant musical writing. Don’t miss this one!

And finally, Warm Breath of Spring: Folksongs & Spirituals. Last season’s concert was so successful, we had to do it again.

As always, our concerts strive to transport listeners in a way that only the sonorities of choral music can achieve.

Music at St. AndrewsMusic at St. Andrew’s is a community outreach program offered by historic St. Andrew’s Church in downtown Toronto. Our program was inspired by the church’s 2011 purchase of a Bösendorfer Imperial grand piano, which we share with the greater community. This magnificent piano is used extensively in our free, mostly classical Friday Noontime Recitals, which run from October to November and February to May. The 45-minute recitals are performed by post-graduate students and professors from U of T’s Music Department, by established performers and by rising young stars.

The 10th year of our popular recitals launches on October 6. Watch for “A Ceilidh Kind of Christmas” on December 8, headlined by St. Andrew's renowned professional choir and featuring a traditional Cape Breton fiddler and other instrumentalists. The lively, down-home program will span seasonal favourites popularised by the Rankin Sisters, the Barra MacNeils, Stan Rogers and others. Admission is free but donations will be accepted for our church’s Refugee Support program.

Music at St. Thomas's Anglican Church 2023St. Thomas’s music program elevates our worship, freely offering the gift of music to anyone coming through our doors (physically, or virtually via livestream). Music creates community and meaningful connection as we attract skilled choristers and other musicians, feature guest artists from our parish and beyond, and welcome all who come to hear them. Under the leadership of Interim Director of Music Elizabeth Anderson, choral and organ music are offered at the 9:30am Sung Mass, at the 11am High Mass, and at Evensong and Devotions at 5pm Evensong, a service of prayers and music, features the great heritage of Anglican sacred music as sung in British cathedrals. We welcome experienced choristers who value a high standard of ensemble singing to audition by contacting eanderson@stthomas.on.ca.

We have launched a choral program for children with unchanged voices, ages seven and up. The St. Thomas’s Choristers rehearse after school one day a week and sing at the 9:30am Sung Mass. Our vision is inspired by programs in cathedrals, parish churches, and academic colleges across the UK and North America. Children will be provided with a free comprehensive music education, with a focus on sacred repertoire. Contact mpiazza@stthomas.on.ca. Finally, through our Friends of Music (honorary co-chairs Molly Johnson and Larry Beckwith), we host concerts and lecture-recitals featuring a variety of celebrated artists. The choirs also present occasional concerts, and our Advent carol services are a much-loved tradition.

The organisation started in 2001 as Nocturnes at Masaryktown to present Czech and Slovak artists to Canadian audiences.

Initially, the concerts were held at Prague restaurant, and after a few years moved to the Czech community centre in downtown Toronto - located at St. Wenceslaus Church at 496 Gladstone Avenue. In the past 20 years, we presented singers Eva Urbanova, Zdenek Plech, John Holland, Gustav Belacek and others, Panocha, Prazak, Zemlinsky quartets, instrumentalists Anton Kubalek, Boris Krajny, David Kalhous, Ivan Zenaty, Radim Zenkl and others, as well as musical lectures about Karel Ancerl and operatic audio visual presentation by Iain Scott.

For the upcoming season - starting in October - the Zemlinsky Quartet from Prague with clarinettist Peter Stoll present Mozart’s clarinet quintet and Dvorak’s American quartet. For the celebration of the birth of Czechoslovakia, the pianist Jan Cmejla presents works by Janacek, Dvorak and Chopin. In November, we have an operatic program from Prague (John Holland, bass baritone) and a classical jazz concert in December (MIro Letko), and for spring 2024, we present mandolinist and guitarist Radim Zenkl, as well as duo pianists from Prague (TBA). Concerts are of the highest quality and entertaining, with catering always to follow.

20th ANNUAL DIRECTORY OF MUSIC MAKERS

We are pleased to present our 20th annual Blue Pages, a directory of music presenters and arts services published every year in our October magazine, and maintained year-round online, under the “Who’s Who” tab at thewholenote.com. This year’s 152-profile portrait of musical life in the Greater Toronto area and Southern Ontario has two segments: section 1 reflects the wealth and diversity of music presenters and performers in our region – orchestras, choirs, opera companies, chamber ensembles, etcetera; section 2 is for individuals and organisations providing services to artists in the communities we cover, predominantly artist managers and publicists.

We’d like to thank all who have chosen to participate in this year’s Blue Pages; individuals and organisations whose support and dedication helps sustain not only The WholeNote but the music community in general. If your organisation missed being part of the October Blue Pages, we’ll be publishing a “latecomers” supplement in the November issue. And the online directory accepts new members year round.

For information on the benefits of a WholeNote membership (of which this Blue Pages profile is a feature), please contact Karen Ages at karen@thewholenote.com or 416-323-2232 x26.
