Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing ArtsThe Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts (the Isabel) is a home for the creative arts at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario and a hub of vibrant artistic study, creation, and exhibition in our community. The building houses the Queen’s Department of Film and Media and the DAN School of Drama and Music, as well as the Isabel house season, which brings some of the most exciting and acclaimed musicians to its 567-seat concert hall. Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, the Isabel brings together world-class arts spaces and programs with a captivating sense of place, creating a dynamic venue for our students and community to learn, discover, think, do, and experience together.

Opened in September 2014, the Isabel was designed by Oslo/New York-based firm Snøhetta and Ottawa’s N45, with acoustics and theatre design by ARUP and Theatre Projects Consultants. Anchored by a transformational gift to the Initiative Campaign from Drs. Alfred and Isabel Bader, the Isabel was inspired by the Baders’ love - of the arts, of Queen’s, and of each other - and is named in Isabel’s honour. Click here for a Virtual Tour.

Jubilate Singers 2022The Jubilate Singers is an SATB community choir performing music from a variety of cultural traditions under the direction of Isabel Bernaus. The choir enjoys singing in many different languages and collaborating with other arts organizations representing the cultural diversity of Toronto. The choir is particularly known for its expertise in Latin American music, performed with some of Toronto’s finest Latin American instrumentalists. Last year we rehearsed both virtually and in hybrid mode, produced an online concert and in May 2022 returned to performing in-person. In 2022/23 we will be rehearsing in person, with hybrid options as needed, and performing three in-person concerts. A highlight of the season is “Roots and Intersections”, a collaboration with Denise Williams and guest artists exploring the music of the Black, Jewish, and Muslim diasporas.

The Jubilate Singers is an auditioned choir with a Choral Development program for those who are not ready to audition and would benefit from additional attention to ear training and sight reading. We are an inclusive and welcoming choir that works to enhance the musical skills of all its singers, and we are always looking for new members!

Meditation, Tai Chi, Hymn Sings, Bible Study, Book Clubs, Faith Exploration and Social Justice discussions - we are very active online during the weekdays, both during the day and at night. We have many choral concerts and partner with artists in the community to present an evening of creativity with unique ideas that can shine a light on a situation, expand the discussions or just simply entertain.

Peterborough Singers 2022The Peterborough Singers is an auditioned 100-voice community choir of adults and youth. We perform four concerts a year: a Yuletide concert, Handel’s Messiah, another oratorio, and one concert dedicated to music outside the box of regular classical programming. Past oratorios have included music by Bach, Verdi, Fauré, Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn and many others. Past popular music concerts have been soul, folk, Celtic, Broadway, music by the Beatles, or music highlighting the work of a particular modern composer. Fortunately we are not limited by the lack of availability of sheet music for the popular music we wish to perform because of local associates who are able to create original arrangements for the desired repertoire.

Concerts this season are Yuletide Cheer, Handel’s Messiah, Verdi’s Requiem, and Big Band Music.

Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings from September to the beginning of May at Murray Street Baptist Church in Peterborough. Prior to most rehearsals we provide ongoing educational initiatives which allow interested members to greatly improve their sight-reading or musical skill levels at no additional cost above the yearly membership fee. Auditions take place in May and September.

SINE NOMINE Ensemble for Medieval MusicSINE NOMINE was formed in 1991 to research and perform music from before 1500, and has given concerts in Canada, the United States, and the UK. The members have varied backgrounds in vocal and instrumental performance (wind instruments, fiddles, lutes, and percussion), musicology, and medieval history, language, literature, liturgy, theatre, and manuscript studies. In preparing repertoire, we draw on all these specialties, and work with improvisation and ornamentation, medieval pronunciations and tuning systems, hoping to create performances which speak to modern audiences (and would not have been wholly foreign to medieval listeners!) We blend vocal and instrumental music from medieval courts and churches with readings, and occasionally drama or liturgical action, to provide insight into the fascinating artistic and intellectual culture of the Middle Ages. SINE NOMINE is currently working on a project to present the diverse repertoire of a remarkable 14th-century northern Italian manuscript through both music and dance. Concert dates for 2022/23 are TBA; tickets will be available through www.brownpapertickets.com.

Southern Opera Lyric Theatre SOLO 2022SOLO formed in April 2015 and performed its first concerts in Burlington and Hamilton in September 2015 – the latter in celebration of Festitalia’s 40th Anniversary. The concerts were met with enthusiasm and excitement and spoke of a need for opera in the community.

The 2016/17 season marked our first season of main productions which included La Traviata and Tosca performed at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. We have performed at least two mainstage productions a year ever since. Interest has grown as witnessed by an increase in ticket sales from one production to the next.

We have further performed many fundraising concerts at local churches thereby increasing our fanbase, and increasing their appreciation of this valuable art from. To help develop this appreciation, apart from mainstage performances, we offer education programs for the public in the form of interactive lectures and informal talks through the main public library in Burlington, at Retirement Homes, and also prior to our mainstage performances at the Burlington Performing arts Centre.

We are also keenly interested in educating the youth in the community about opera and will work with local schools to let them experience this valuable art form, live.

Toronto Chamber ChoirThe Toronto Chamber Choir has held a prominent place in Canada’s early music scene since 1968. Since 2014, the TCC’s Artistic Director is lutenist Lucas Harris. Past directors have included David Fallis and Mark Vuorinen.

The TCC’s 30 to 40 auditioned singers specialize in performing Renaissance and Baroque repertoire in collaboration with period instrumentalists, though the choir’s themed concerts often include music from other time periods and diverse cultures. Our performances often explore the cultural context of our repertoire using narration and a multimedia component. Since 2014, we’ve run the Toronto Chamber Consort section lead program for professional singers with a special interest in early music, and since 2003, we’ve run an apprenticeship program with Rosedale Heights School for the Arts.

Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at Church of the Transfiguration (Mt. Pleasant/Davisville), with appropriate COVID protocols adjusted by our Health & Safety Committee. The TCC is committed to inclusion and diversity of perspectives within the choir. We welcome audition requests from singers with excellent choral skills at any time through arrangement with the Artistic Director.

20th ANNUAL DIRECTORY OF MUSIC MAKERS

We are pleased to present our 20th annual Blue Pages, a directory of music presenters and arts services published every year in our October magazine, and maintained year-round online, under the “Who’s Who” tab at thewholenote.com. This year’s 152-profile portrait of musical life in the Greater Toronto area and Southern Ontario has two segments: section 1 reflects the wealth and diversity of music presenters and performers in our region – orchestras, choirs, opera companies, chamber ensembles, etcetera; section 2 is for individuals and organisations providing services to artists in the communities we cover, predominantly artist managers and publicists.

We’d like to thank all who have chosen to participate in this year’s Blue Pages; individuals and organisations whose support and dedication helps sustain not only The WholeNote but the music community in general. If your organisation missed being part of the October Blue Pages, we’ll be publishing a “latecomers” supplement in the November issue. And the online directory accepts new members year round.
