DaCapo Chamber Choir 2022The DaCapo Chamber Choir was founded in 1998 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario under the direction of Leonard Enns. The mission of the choir is to promote the best of contemporary choral music through public performance and recordings, including the intentional championing of music of Canadian and local composers. The choir’s annual national NewWorks choral competition for Canadian composers aids in establishing a vibrant and vital presence for recent and emerging Canadian choral music.

Our performance season consists of three annual concerts in Kitchener-Waterloo: one in the fall around Remembrance Day, a mid-winter, and a spring concert. In addition, the choir performs on an ad hoc basis at other events.

The choir has released three CDs: NewWorks (2019); the award-winning ShadowLand (winner of the 2010 ACCC’s National Choral Recording of the Year award, including the Juno-nominated Nocturne by Leonard Enns); and Still (2004).

2022/23 concert season:

  • November 19 and 20 - “Earthrise,” featuring the premiere of a commissioned work by Nicholas Ryan Kelly
  • March 4 and 5 - “Winding Toward Peace,” with guest guitarist Daniel Ramjattan
  • May 13 and 14 - “Restoration,” featuring a DaCapo alumni choir

SoundCrowdSoundCrowd, Toronto’s first large-scale contemporary a cappella ensemble, is the brainchild of Artistic Director, Scott Pietrangelo. The group made its concert debut in 2016 alongside former Barenaked Ladies front-man Steven Page at the Danforth Music Hall. Since then, it has been featured on a national TV show (The Social), created viral music videos, performed with other notable Toronto-based groups (Cadence, Countermeasure, Retrocity), sang backup for Jonathan Antoine (Britain's Got Talent), opened for Disney's a cappella sensation DCappella, and performed at Carnegie Hall with choirs from around the world under the direction of Deke Sharon (Pitch Perfect, The Sing Off). After surviving the lockdowns of the pandemic, SoundCrowd is back working on two new shows and releasing its long-awaited debut album, All Voice No Limits, in 2023. SoundCrowd's vision is to:

    • Enrich the Toronto community with the proven health and social benefits of participating in and experiencing choral music
    • Make connections through voice and movement using repertoire that is exciting, fun and meaningful to all
    • Create dynamic and original performances of music from all genres using the musical language of a cappella

Nocturnes in the City is in its 23rd season.

During our last two seasons, we had a few interruptions of presenting our concerts but we still managed to keep three Zoom sessions with Iain Scott about famous Czech operas by Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Leoš Janáček and Bohuslav Martinů.

We also held a few recitals by pianist David Kalhous, and mandolin player Radim Zenkl. Local jazz players performed two dixieland concerts in 2021.

Our present season is starting with excellent Czech violinist Ivan Zenaty and pianist David Kalhous on October 30, 2022. This is followed on November 27 by an evening featuring an upcoming film about a famous Czech conductor, Karel Ančerl, who was the Music Director of the Toronto Symphony orchestra from 1968 to 1973. Granddaughter of Karel Ančerl, Maximiliana Ancerl from Prague, will be present together with movie director and musician Ivan Bierhanzel - showing clips from the movie and reading letters from Karel Ančerl to other famous musicians. The last concert in 2022 is “Czech-Slovak Dixieland” on December 11 under the leadership of famous trombone player Miro Letko from Slovakia. All concerts take place in the hall of St. Wenceslaus Church, 496 Gladstone Avenue in Toronto.

In 2023, we are planning for four different pianists.

Westben Centre for Connection and Creativity Through Music 2022Westben is where music and nature spring to life! Nestled amongst the hills of Northumberland County, two hours east of Toronto, 40 minutes from Peterborough, Cobourg and Belleville, near Campbellford, Westben presents a myriad of concerts and outdoor experiences in and around its three venues. The custom-built, timber-frame barn seats 400 with doors that roll open onto a lush meadow. Willow Hill amphitheatre offers the outdoor festival experience and the cosy campfire venue offers performers and audiences a chance to share songs and stories with smores and a sunset. Imagine sunshine and smiles while listening to everything from Bach to Broadway, jazz, folk, pop, comedy including music by our neighbours from Alderville First Nation and the Performer-Composer Residency. Westben will open its 24th Season of Concerts on July 1st, 2023. The month-long festival will feature over 70 artists in 26 concerts. But Westben is more than just great performances, it is a true music in nature experience. Gourmet picnics on the meadow, curated wine and beer selections from the Milkshed, pre-concert chats, guided nature walks with live music on a neighbouring Nature Reserve and a chance to relax by the pond, all make Westben the place to be.

20th ANNUAL DIRECTORY OF MUSIC MAKERS

We are pleased to present our 20th annual Blue Pages, a directory of music presenters and arts services published every year in our October magazine, and maintained year-round online, under the “Who’s Who” tab at thewholenote.com. This year’s 152-profile portrait of musical life in the Greater Toronto area and Southern Ontario has two segments: section 1 reflects the wealth and diversity of music presenters and performers in our region – orchestras, choirs, opera companies, chamber ensembles, etcetera; section 2 is for individuals and organisations providing services to artists in the communities we cover, predominantly artist managers and publicists.

We’d like to thank all who have chosen to participate in this year’s Blue Pages; individuals and organisations whose support and dedication helps sustain not only The WholeNote but the music community in general. If your organisation missed being part of the October Blue Pages, we’ll be publishing a “latecomers” supplement in the November issue. And the online directory accepts new members year round.

For information on the benefits of a WholeNote membership (of which this Blue Pages profile is a feature), please contact Karen Ages at karen@thewholenote.com or 416-323-2232 x26.
