Explanatory Notes

1] Please indicate all dates on which a concert programme or show is being presented.

2] Please indicate the starting times for all performances listed in Item 1. (Do not indicate when "doors open," but when the performance actually begins.)

3] The "Presenter" is the person or organization who is responsible for the concert taking place. (The Presenter is not necessarily the same as the Venue.)

4] Provide a short, descriptive title for the concert.

5] There are three formats in which this information may be provided. Classical presenters should indicate each composer (surname) programmed, followed by title of work (maximum of five). Alternately, presenters may simply say "works by," and list composers (maximum of five). For jazz, world music and other events that are not suited to the above formats, presenters may offer a 10-word description of the event (subject to editing by The WholeNote staff).

6] List performing ensembles, soloists, accompanists, conductors (maximum of five). For classical concerts, please indicate the voice-types of singers. For opera, please list both the voice-types and the roles for each singer. (For other genres, the designation "vocals" or "voice" is sufficient.)

7] "Venue" is the hall, theatre, or any other place where concert is performed.

8] The WholeNote requires a complete street address for all listings. Outside the City of Toronto, include name of town.

9] The WholeNote requires a phone number that the public may call for ticket prices and other information about the event.

10] Please list single adult ticket price, followed by students, seniors, advance purchase, and any other price options. Do not include subscription prices, or special discounts not available to the general public.

11] Indicate any charity or cause that will receive ticket-proceeds, or benefit in some way from this event.

12] "Special notes" includes such things as pre-concert chats, or refreshments included in the ticket price.

You can now search The WholeNote's online listings by Musical Category and also by Geographic Zone.

The Wholenote's listings (online only) are all "tagged" according to 8 zones and 17 categories, listed below with explanatory notes.

To conduct a search:

  • Open either the "GTA" (Toronto, Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions) or the "Beyond the GTA" listings page on The WholeNote's website.

  • Hit "Control+F" (or "Command+F" with an Apple computer).

  • In the "Find" window that appears on your screen, type a tag (i.e. =Z1 or =Chor). Be sure to include the equal sign, with no space after it. Every time you click on "Next" you will be taken to the next listing in the category you have chosen.

You can search for other things as well, such as specific composers, performers, musical organizations, or even free events. Just open a "Find" window, and type in the word you wish to search for.

To Search by Musical Category

We at The WholeNote are generous with our category tags. They are intended as broad suggestions to the various musical communities that comprise our readership, rather than an attempt to strictly define musical genres and styles. Some listings may have more than one category tag because events sometimes belong to more than one category.

=Band Band or Wind Ensemble

This category includes all performances by ensembles of wind instruments (except for jazz bands, which are tagged =Jazz).

=Cham Chamber Music

This category includes classical music performances by small groups or solo musicians.

=Chor Choral Music

This tag is for vocal groups large and small, as well as any concert in which a choir is included.

=Danc Dance Performance

This category is for dance performances, or any musical event that includes dance.

=Earl Early Music

This category is for baroque, renaissance and medieval music. As well, any other performances that are "historically informed" or approached with attention to period-performance techniques are included.

=Folk Folk Music

Here, "folk music" means traditional music from North America, the British Isles and other European countries. (Folk musics originating outside these regions are tagged as =Worl.)

=Jazz Jazz Concerts

Most references to jazz in The WholeNote appear in the club listings. However, jazz performances in formal concert settings are included in the general listings.

=Kids Music for Children

This category is for musical events specifically programmed for young audiences.

=MusT Music Theatre

This category includes staged theatrical productions in which music is prominent: operetta, G&S, Broadway musicals, contemporary music-theatre, etc., as well as unstaged concerts of music theatre repertoire.

=NewM New "Classical" Music

Here, the term "new" broadly means "art-music" that is modernist, postmodernist or otherwise contemporary in style. Concerts that are wholly devoted to new music, or that include significant new-music content, are included.

=Oper Opera Performances

This tag is applied to staged opera productions, and also operatic concerts and recitals.

=Orgn Organ Recitals and Concerts

This category is for solo organ performances, or an organist performing with other musicians.

=Orch Orchestral Music

Here, "orchestra" means a large or small conducted group of instrumentalists – usually strings, winds and percussion, but possibly just strings – performing classical music.

=Othr Other Concerts

This tag is used very rarely, when no other tag is suitable.

=Pian Piano Recitals and Concerts

This category includes solo piano performances, piano duets, or concerts that include music for piano only. It also includes piano concertos with orchestra.

=RelS Religious Service

This tag is for musical performances that are contained within a religious service.

=Voic Vocal Recitals and Concerts

This category is for solo vocalist(s) with piano or small instrumental groups. It also includes vocalists appearing in concert with orchestras.

=Worl World Music

Here, "world music" means music from "folk" or "classical" traditions that originate outside the Western world.
