Welcome to The Canary Pages - The WholeNote’s 23rd annual directory of Ontario choirs.

We hope you’ll enjoy browsing these profiles where choirs introduce themselves, in their own words. Are you new to the region, maybe a lapsed chorister looking to sing again? Are you secretly thinking of joining a choir for the very first time? This is the perfect place to start your search. There are choirs that have been around for decades, and groups new to the scene. There are large choruses, small chamber ensembles, children’s and youth choirs, auditioned choirs and those open to all, for every level of skill and commitment. Whether you want to sing or listen, there’s a rich world of choral music just waiting for you to discover and enjoy. Profiles will be added on an ongoing basis, so please check back frequently for additions and updates.

Amadeus Choir of Greater TorontoEnlivening Toronto’s arts community for more than 50 years, the award-winning Amadeus Choir is a semi-professional choir of auditioned voices from Toronto and the surrounding areas. The Choir champions the best of choral music and premieres works of Canadian and international composers through a self-produced Toronto concert series, guest performances, and special events. Canadian Celtic ChoirCanadian Celtic Choir, founded in 1996 by Dan Surman (BFA, B.Ed), is a London-based SATB choir of about 50 members that has built a solid reputation as one of the most in-demand choirs in SW Ontario. Our artistic director/conductor is Paul Grambo, MMus, and we are accompanied by Stephen Holowitz, BMus, BEd. Our repertoire features songs primarily from Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, and the Maritimes. Recipient of the Mayor’s Award from the City of London for our cultural contributions to the city, the CCC won Most Popular Classical Choir at the Forest City London Music Awards in 2015.

Tours are planned every 3-4 years and Newfoundland is next, June 20 to 29, 2025. Our most recent CDs, A Celtic Noel (2013) and Celtic Inspiration (2014), are out of print. More recent recordings are available on our YouTube channel.

Canadian Children's Opera CompanyAs Canada’s only permanent children’s opera company, the Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) has ignited a passion for opera in thousands of young voices over 57 years. We offer exceptional training in singing, music, and drama for youth ages 3 to 19 across five choirs and a new Young Artist Studio, a pre-professional training program for young people ages 16 and up. The CCOC performs regularly with leading arts organizations in Toronto and beyond, with members regularly performing in the Canadian Opera Company’s productions. The Cummer Avenue United Church choir has returned to our newly renovated building at the corner of Cummer Ave. and Yonge St. Final work on our three manual Casavant pipe organ is to be completed this spring. We are a group of volunteer singers, supported by professional section leads, that provide strong musical leadership for Sunday morning worship services throughout the year. Echo Women's ChoirECHO, established in 1991, is a group of harmonizing women of all ages and backgrounds, directed by Alan Gasser and Katie White in the heart of downtown Toronto. We are non-auditioned. The ability to read music is helpful but not required. We are accessible to all through a sliding scale fee.

We sing traditional folk songs from around the world, original Canadian compositions, diverse spiritual music, and socially conscious music about women, peace and environmental justice.

ECHO rehearses on Tuesday evenings at the Church of the Holy Trinity (beside the Eaton Centre). Two terms per year, with concerts in May and December. We sing at grassroots community events throughout the year. Our spring concert is on May 4 at 3pm at Holy Trinity.

Etobicoke Centennial ChoirEtobicoke Centennial Choir (ECC) is a community choir dedicated to celebrating the art and joy of choral singing. Guided by professional artists, we offer vibrant and diverse performances of repertoire, ranging from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions and popular music.

ECC offers a challenging and supportive choral experience. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday, September to June, from 7:30pm to 9:45pm at Humber Valley United Church in Etobicoke. New singers are welcome. Some choral experience and the ability to read music are required.

Our 2025/26 season includes Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, music by women composers including Carol Barnett’s A World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, and our tribute to the big band era, “Sing It High – Swing It Low”.

The Jubilate SingersThe Jubilate Singers is a mixed-voice auditioned choir of 35 voices directed by Isabel Bernaus. The repertoire includes world music in original languages, orchestral works and 20-21C choral pieces. Past collaborations include the Wychwood Clarinet Choir and the York Chamber Ensemble. Our 2025/26 season includes the Abya Yala Choral Suite by Chilean-American composer Freddy Vilches, a setting of poems in Indigenous languages from across the Americas and, secondly, a collaboration with the University of Guelph focusing on Canadian Indigenous music. We rehearse Tuesday nights and perform three concerts a year, plus two community appearances. Interested singers may sit in on a rehearsal and book an audition, if desired. Music is central to worship at Leaside United Church. The rich music program includes the Chancel Choir and the Junior Choir.

The Chancel Choir consists of a group of approximately 20 voices. This includes a professional core and volunteer singers. The choir provides musical leadership at the Sunday 10:30am weekly worship services, and rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

The Junior Choir, under the leadership of Nancy Stewart, provides musical leadership and sings anthems several times a year. We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 7:15pm.

London Pro Musica ChoirLondon Pro Musica Choir (LPMC) was founded in 1970 as a chamber choir, organized and run by its members. We were the first, and remain the oldest, unaffiliated concert choir in London with a current membership of over 40 singers. LPMC has been led by some of Canada’s finest conductors, including Brian Jackson, Howard Dyck, Ken Fleet, Dr. Vicki St. Pierre, and Dr. Charlene Pauls. Our current Artistic Director/Conductor is Paul Grambo, M.Mus and our accompanist is Hayoon Kim, M.Mus, M.Ed.

Milestones in our history include winning the CBC Choral Competition, releasing nine CDs, and premiering and performing many new works by Canadian composers such as Andrew Balfour, Gerald Bales, Lydia Adams, and local composers Oliver Whitehead, Stephanie Martin and Rod Culham. In 2024, we won the FCLMA award for Best Classical Choir.

The Milton Choristers is a four-part adult community choir that has entertained audiences in the Halton Region since 1968. Our season runs from September to May, with two major concerts, often with premium guest soloists and musicians. We sing a wide-ranging repertoire from classical to contemporary. Rehearsals are on Tuesday nights from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Knox Presbyterian Church (upper hall), 170 Main St. E. in Milton. A love of singing, some sight reading, and a sense of rhythm, as well as a sense of humour are definite assets.

The choir is dedicated to helping expand each person's musical ability. However, members are also encouraged to spend time outside of rehearsal time to learn the music. Electronic MIDI files, by section, are also available for your learning assistance.

North Halton Community SingersThe North Halton Community Singers, with some 80 amateur singers, started in 1971. Rehearsals are at the Acton Heritage Town Hall every Monday night and we perform at various venues in Halton Hills. The choir is led by music director Eleanor Wallace who has had a long and distinguished career as a music teacher in Georgetown and Oakville. Mark Peterson, a very accomplished musician, is our accompanist.

A non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers, the North Halton Community Singers is a registered charity performing a variety of musical genres, including classical, pop and folk, and from sacred to secular. It has performed at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, the Mississauga Living Arts Centre, and also in Holland and Ireland.

Toronto Chamber ChoirToronto Chamber Choir has held a prominent place in Canada’s early music scene since 1968. An accomplished group of 30-40 auditioned singers, TCC specializes in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, working with period instrumentalists, but also exploring music from other periods and cultures. TCC usually gives two evening concerts and two afternoon “Kaffeemusiks” that contextualize our repertoire through narration and a multimedia component.

We rehearse Wednesday evenings at the Church of the Transfiguration on Manor Rd. E, just west of Mount Pleasant Rd., with occasional Saturday “retreats,” often featuring guest presenters. We are currently seeking new members, with auditions anytime by arrangement with the director. We welcome diversity in our membership.

Toronto Children's ChorusThe Toronto Children's Chorus (TCC) is a vibrant musical community that has been nurturing young voices for almost 50 years. The Chorus is led by internationally-acclaimed Artistic Director Dr. Zimfira Poloz (2022-present), who follows in the esteemed footsteps of Founder and Artistic Director Jean Ashworth Bartle C.M., O.Ont., and Artistic Director Elise Bradley, MNZM. TCC consists of eight choirs for ages six through 18 that provide exceptional music, vocal and performance training. TCC presents a concert series each season and regularly collaborates with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and other groups. TCC Chamber, its senior choir, has represented Canada on 33 international tours and seven national tours. In July 2025, they will be Guest Choir at the prestigious International Choral Ḵathaumixw Festival in BC.

Toronto Mendelssohn ChoirThe Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMChoir) is one of Canada’s oldest and largest choral organizations. Founded in 1895 during Massey Hall’s inaugural season, it has been a leader in Canadian choral music, commissioning works by Canadian composers, presenting world and national premieres, and collaborating with renowned orchestras such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

In May 2021, Jean-Sébastien Vallée became Artistic Director, only the eighth conductor in the Choir’s 130-year history. TMChoir aspires to introduce audiences to choral masterworks — both renowned and lesser-known — making them accessible and inspiring to all.

The choir includes the TMSingers, a core of professional singers, and over 130 auditioned volunteers.

Toronto Welsh Male Voice ChoirThe Toronto Welsh Male Voice Choir (TWMVC) was established in 1995 by first president, Gwyn Roberts. The choir continues to grow musically under the direction of William Woloschuk and principal accompanist Matthew Coons. Our blend of traditional and contemporary music, all sung off book in accordance with tradition, appeals to a broad audience.

We perform typically 10 to 12 concerts per season, in the GTA area and further afield in southern Ontario. We have undertaken major tours in Wales, the East Coast, western Canada, and Newfoundland. We remain true to our Welsh tradition; we also include songs in several other languages in our repertoire.

Vesnivka ChoirVesnivka Choir, an award-winning women’s ensemble established in 1965 by founding artistic director Halyna Kvitka Kondracki, has delighted audiences with its rich repertoire of Ukrainian liturgical, classical and traditional folk music. VOCA Chorus of TorontoThe VOCA Chorus of Toronto, a dynamic, auditioned ensemble directed by Jenny Crober performs a wide range of repertoire (including Canadian premieres) in collaboration with superb guest artists. Our wonderful collaborative pianist is Dakota Scott-Digout. VOCA's season consists of concerts, cabaret fundraisers, outreach events and workshops with numerous renowned clinicians, including Ola Gjeilo, Ivars Taurins and Sarah Quartel.

At our May 10 "Carmina Burana" concert, VOCA will present Orff's epic masterpiece, along with selections by Andrew Balfour, Brian Tate and others, featuring special guest, Andrew Haji, tenor, with Noelle Slaney, soprano; Parker Clements, baritone; Shawn Grenke, piano; and Jamie Drake, Michelle Colton, Richard Burrows and Tim Francom, percussion. Rehearsals are Mondays at Eastminster United.
