Apr 14 2:00: Classical Music Club Toronto. Murray Perahia. From 1973 to 2010, Perahia recorded exclusively for Columbia Masterworks (now Sony Classical). His first major recording project was Mozart’s 27 piano concertos, conducted from the keyboard with the English Chamber Orchestra. In the 1980s he also recorded Beethoven’s five piano concertos, with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In 2016, Perahia signed with Deutsche Grammophon. In addition to his career as a piano soloist, he is actively involved in chamber music and has appeared regularly with the Guarneri and Budapest String Quartets. He is also Principal Conductor of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields with which he both records and performs. The 33 Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120, commonly known as the Diabelli Variations, is a set of variations for the piano written between 1819 and 1823 by Ludwig van Beethoven on a waltz composed by Anton Diabelli. Often considered to be one of the greatest sets of variations for keyboard along with J. S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, the work has been called “the greatest set of variations ever written” (Donald Tovey), “the greatest of all piano works” (Alfred Brendel), and “a microcosm of Beethoven’s art” (Hans von Bülow). In celebration of the bicentennial of the piece in 2019 we will examine a selection of video and audio recordings.
