Out in the east end of Toronto a quiet revolution is happening at Scarborough Music Theatre!

Known for the high quality of its community productions of traditional musicals, SMT  is taking a gamble this year on their audiences being ready to take a chance on a daring  “out there Sci Fi musical comedy season” starting with the stage version of the Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly cult movie favourite Xanadu (in which the muse ‘Kira’ comes down to earth to inspire  artist ‘Sonny’ to follow his dreams). The songs by Newton John and the Electric Light Orchestra are still addictive, roller skating is back in vogue, and from their posts online the cast seems to be having a ball. - Jennifer Parr

xanaduOnstage until November 18. Xanadu will be followed by another regional premiere: Freaky Friday in February, and the even more cultish Rocky Horror in May.
