Tafelmusik: Tales of 2 Cities, Friday May 20

This weekend, Tafelmusik presents Alison Mackay’s latest multimedia project: an exploration of coffeehouse culture in Leipzig and Damascus in the 18th century. As Mackay writes in the program notes, “the development of the coffeehouses in the cities of the Middle East and Europe offered citizens the opportunity to experience fine music-making and coffee drinking at the same time...though separated by 3,000 kilometres, the two cities had a number of fascinating characteristics in common.” As always, the world-class players of Tafelmusik will perform on period instruments—though this time, by memory, and joined onstage by Demetri Petsalakis (oud), Naghmeh Farahmand (percussion), and two of Toronto’s most engaging stage personalities, Maryem Tollar and Alon Nashman.
