Canadian Opera Company: Maometto II, Wednesday May 11

The Canadian Opera Company is closing its 2015/16 season with Rossini’s Maometto II, a hidden gem hailed by the New York times as the composer’s “most ambitious and radical work.” Written in Naples in 1820, the work was performed for only a few years before it was heavily altered by Rossini, reappearing in 1826 the guise of French opera Le siège de Corinthe. The original score, after nearly two centuries, was restored to its 1820 version and premiered by the Santa Fe Opera in 2012. It is this historic Santa Fe production that goes onstage at the COC next month.
