Opera York is the professional opera of York Region. Founded in 1996 it presents full productions of traditional operas with chorus, orchestra and supertitles. Our home is the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts, a theatre designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and a perfect accoustic venue for full opera.

We are a platform for emerging Canadian opera singers, particularly from the York Region area and provide the York Region residents the opportunity to enjoy professional opera right in their community.

Civic Light Opera Company, The Since its 1979 debut, this outstanding music and theatre (and musical theatre!) organisation has been offering performances of some of the great musical, operatic and dramatic gems of the past century. Still under the direction of the company's founder, Joe Cascone, the company presents virtually all facets of musical and dramatic performances. From the hits of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Lerner & Loewe, Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman to lesser-known masterpieces by unsung composers and playwrights, the company's high quality of production and performance has been their much-heralded standard. In 2026, the world-renowned play AMADEUS (the highly fictionalized lives of Mozart and Salieri and their fascinating musical and professional relationships) is being presented at the historic VideoCabaret Theatre from July 15 to 26.

PIANO LUNAIRE is a contemporary music collective based in Toronto and New York City, pursuing the presentation of artistic excellence in the 21st Century. Founded in 2018 by pianist/composer Adam Sherkin, the company's portfolio is three-fold: to produce monthly full moon performances plus a MainStage series, "Composers In Play,” to house a recording-publishing label and, finally, to commission keyboard-centric works from a swiftly evolving roster of new-gen composers. 

Correspondingly, our mission comprises three mandates: 1) present new and dynamic music written from the last seventy-five years to present; 2) give voice to emerging professionals in the vibrant scene that is the new music ecosystem and; 3) offer audiences a direct, challenging and ultimately supportive concert experience, as they engage with the music of today and the artists of the future. 

It is Piano Lunaire's aim that our collaborations and performances spark new artistic and social developments. We hope to contribute to the evolution of classical music by challenging of existing norms of concert presentation and concert content, broadened to include living composers whose practices represent a diversity of lived experiences and cultural backgrounds.

We are pleased to present our 20th annual Blue Pages, a directory of music presenters and arts services published every year in our October magazine, and maintained year-round online, under the “Who’s Who” tab at thewholenote.com. This year’s 152-profile portrait of musical life in the Greater Toronto area and Southern Ontario has two segments: section 1 reflects the wealth and diversity of music presenters and performers in our region – orchestras, choirs, opera companies, chamber ensembles, etcetera; section 2 is for individuals and organisations providing services to artists in the communities we cover, predominantly artist managers and publicists.

We’d like to thank all who have chosen to participate in this year’s Blue Pages; individuals and organisations whose support and dedication helps sustain not only The WholeNote but the music community in general. If your organisation missed being part of the October Blue Pages, we’ll be publishing a “latecomers” supplement in the November issue. And the online directory accepts new members year round.
