Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra 2021Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra brings to life some of the greatest musical masterpieces, presents internationally-acclaimed performers, and helps introduce some of Canada’s rising stars in their debut performances with a symphony orchestra. The Orchestra has been performing for Greater Toronto audiences since 1986.

The 2022/23 season promises six exciting evenings of new compositions and traditional favourites under the baton of Maestro Martin MacDonald. Highlights include Canadian composer Vivian Fung's Prayer, Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Neilsen's Clarinet Concerto, and Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. Soloists include the young piano prodigy Ryan Huang, violinist Aaron Schwebel, cellist Rachel Mercer and Graham Lord on clarinet.

Music In the AfternoonThrough its “Music in the Afternoon” concert series, the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto (WMCT) presents chamber music concerts featuring musicians on the threshold of international recognition, as well as established artists and ensembles. Concerts are held Thursday afternoons at 1:30pm at Walter Hall, University of Toronto, Faculty of Music, 80 Queen’s Park.

This year the WMCT celebrates its 125th season: Connection & Continuity. Concerts include our 2021 Career Development Award winner Michael Bridge, accordion, with Ladom Ensemble and Joseph Macerollo, accordion (October 6, 2022); Quatuor Despax with Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, viola, and Brian Manker, cello (November 17, 2022); Fjóla Evans, composer/curator, with Aizuri Quartet, VC2 Cello Duo, Talisa Blackman, piano and Krista Kais-Prial, vocalist (February 23, 2023); Marion Newman, mezzo-soprano, with Melody Courage, soprano, Evan Korbut, baritone, and Gordon Gerrard, piano (April 6, 2023); Mark Fewer, violin, with Thalea String Quartet, Chris Whitley, violin, and Jeanie Chung, piano (May 4, 2023). Located in the heart of Bloor West Village with a generous acoustic and beautiful sanctuary, St. Olave’s Anglican Church offers a music program strongly rooted in the Anglican tradition, incorporating music spanning across the centuries. Under the direction of Dr. Hanné Becker, St. Olave’s choir leads congregational singing at 10:30am Sunday services, as well as performs anthems and service music for the liturgy. Rehearsals take place on Thursdays from 7:30pm to 9pm and before the Sunday services at 9:30am. New volunteer members are welcome, and the ability to sight-read music is helpful. For more information about joining our choir, please contact Dr. Hanné Becker at music@stolaves.ca. To inquire about renting our space for a concert or recital, please contact the office via email.

Azrieli Music Prizes The Azrieli Foundation 2022The biennial Azrieli Music Prizes (AMP) is Canada’s largest competition devoted to music composition.

AMP advances the Azrieli Foundation’s commitment to discovering, elevating and amplifying artistic voices that exhibit excellence and embodies its belief in music as a vital human endeavour that expresses our creativity, expands our worldview and fosters positive cultural exchange.

Open to the international music community, AMP accepts proposals for works from individuals and institutions of all ages, genders, nationalities, faiths and backgrounds, which are then submitted to its expert juries through an open call.

The three AMP prize packages – valued at $200,000 CAD per Laureate – currently makes it the top competition for music composition in Canada and one of the most substantial in the world.

On October 20, AMP will celebrate its 2022 Laureates with a Gala Concert in Montréal.

Past prize-winners include Canadian composers Keiko Devaux (2020), Kelly-Marie Murphy (2018) and Brian Current (2016), Dutch-born American composer Yotam Haber (2020), Israeli-born Australian composer Yitzhak Yedid (2020), Israeli-American composer Avner Dorman (2018), and US-based Polish composer Wlad Marhulets (2016).
