Music in the Orchard at Spadina MuseumBring your blanket or lawn chair to Spadina Museum, Toronto’s authentic 1920s mansion, and enjoy outdoor musical performances on Sundays in June and July. Every performance is planned with a nod to Spadina’s historical importance, and is inspired by the richness and diversity of Toronto’s jazz-era music scene. This event is presented as part of TO Canada with Love, the City of Toronto’s year-long program of celebrations, commemorations and exhibitions honouring Canada’s 150th birthday. Music From ScratchFree workshop for youth – in partnership with the Canadian Music Centre, Music From Scratch is a free week-long music creation workshop for youth between the ages of 18 and 25. Facilitated by artistic director Jerry Pergolesi and guest composer/sound creator Tina Pearson, and guided by the Contact ensemble, participants engage in creative listening, writing, vocal performance, movement, and graphic and improvisation exercises, leading to the performance of a series of collaborative sound works. Music From Scratch helps participants develop new skills and the confidence to take risks both as listeners and creators. No experience necessary! Just a willingness to learn and explore your own inner creativity.

Kensington Market Jazz FestivalDescribed as “wildly successful” by The Globe and Mail, the inaugural Kensington Market Jazz Festival debuted in style the second weekend of September 2016, when over 200 Toronto musicians performed over 100 shows at nine venues in Kensington Market. Founder Molly Johnson and her team developed this festival to celebrate the neighbourhood’s cultural history, as well as Toronto’s world-class musical fabric of professional musicians. The festival is a not-for-profit organization committed to presenting live musical excellence, and to date has supported The Stephen Lewis Foundation, The Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, St. Stephen’s Community Centre and the Archie Alleyne Scholarship Fund charities. 2017 Honens FestivalA celebration of piano brimming with innovative performance projects and dynamic community concerts, the 2017 Honens Festival marks Canada’s 150th birthday by showcasing some of the country’s brightest classical music stars alongside Honens Laureates. Festival highlights include a recital by Montrose Trio (pianist Jon Kimura Parker, violinist Martin Beaver and cellist Clive Greensmith); a performance by Katherine Chi, 2000 Honens Prize Laureate; a collaboration between Canada’s Cecilia String Quartet and 2015 Honens Prize Laureate Luca Buratto; a late-night cabaret featuring composer-performer Dinuk Wijeratne; a full day of activities at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre; and Open Air – a free outdoor concert at Central Memorial Park.
