Now in its eighth year of bringing outstanding classical music experiences to the city in the summer, Toronto Summer Music Festival features renowned Canadian and international artists in a series of chamber concerts, plus masterclasses, lectures, interviews and free outreach concerts.

The theme of the 2013 festival, “Paris La Belle Époque,” celebrates the unrivalled cultural phenomenon that swept turn of the century Paris. The festival showcases great musical works by French composers including Ravel, Debussy and Fauré, performed by renowned artists including France’s distinguished Trio Pennetier Pasquier Pidoux, pianist Cédric Tiberghien, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Brentano String Quartet, Juno award-winning Gryphon Trio and bass-baritone Philippe Sly.

Westben – Concerts at the Barn celebrates its 14th season, presenting music in the countryside in a variety of genres. This season, entitled “Stories that Sing!,” includes tenor Richard Margison and baritone John Fanning, commemorating the 200th birthdays of Verdi and Wagner. Pianists Robert Silverman, Brian Finley, Leonard Gilbert and Lisa Tahara celebrate the arrival of the Steinway concert grand piano, in a multi-piano-concerto Gala Weekend. The UBC Opera Ensemble performs Bizet’s Carmen. Westben also welcomes André Laplante, soprano Suzie LeBlanc, vocalist Diana Panton, trumpeter Guido Basso and guitarist Robert Michaels. New to the Barn is “Rule Brittania!,” a British Isles Weekend and “Words and Notes,” featuring Canadian authors Judy Fong Bates and Martha Schabas.

The 63rd Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship takes place August 7 to 11 in Shelburne, Ontario. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Shelburne, the event features Canada’s top fiddlers in competition for more than $17,000 in prizes! Community events in conjunction with the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship include camping, a giant fiddle parade, an open air market, Saturday afternoon fiddle and step-dance show, fiddle jam sessions, a concert by Everything Fitz with special guests Nate Douglas and Emily Flack, a beer garden, Battle of the Bands, a non-denominational church service, 24 hour meals and entertainment at the Legion, and community pork BBQ. Local bands That 60s Show and Glory Days, a Bruce Springsteen tribute, will perform at the Entertainment Gardens.
