BRIGADOON Nov 18 - Dec 23 Shaw Festival

The Shaw Festival is bringing back Lerner and Loewe’s first (pre-My Fair Lady) hit musical Brigadoon to the Festival Theatre. It started November 15, and continues to December 23. If like me you have never had the chance to see this romantic musical, with its gorgeous score, on stage, now is the time! Like many people, I grew up watching  the 1954 film version starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, loving the whimsical story of the two buddies from 1940s New York on a hunting trip to Scotland stumbling upon an almost- fairy-tale village in the highlands that thanks to a ‘miracle’ only appears for one day every 100 years. Thanks to the 2014 revising of the book by Canadian Brian Hill, the story now has a more modern relevance - the two friends are now veterans of WWII and the village has escaped not from a vague worry about possible corruption by witches, but from the very real horror of the mid-18th century highland clearances.

I am curious to see if this specific double historical back-dating will  make this original fantasy feel more connected to our own currently war-torn world.  The always luminous Alexis Gordon stars as ‘Fiona,’ directed by veteran Glynis Leyshon. - Jennifer Parr
