Take The Dog Sled (2008) was commissioned by Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. This new work for seven musicians and two Inuit throat singers was premiered during the MSO’s first tour of Nunavik in Quebec’s far North. The work honours both Inuit and Western cultures, combining two great musical traditions without one subsuming the other. The piece captures the joy, tenderness, and energy of life in the North, as well as the mystical quality of the land. Since its premiere, the work has been performed numerous times by orchestras in Canada, the U.S., and Europe.
Acclaimed Canadian composer Alexina Louie has collaborated with leading soloists, ensembles and orchestras around the world. Her orchestral works have been performed by the San Francisco, Montreal, BBC, St. Louis, Toronto, and Vancouver symphony orchestras, as well as China’s NCPA Orchestra, Bejing, among others. Her compositions have been conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, Kent Nagano, Leonard Slatkin, Ingo Metzmacher, and Pinchas Zukerman. An Officer of the Order of Canada, Alexina Louie has received numerous awards for her lifetime of music creation.
Founded in 1983, Esprit Orchestra‘s commitment to commissioning and advancing contemporary music has set it apart as one of the few organizations of its kind on a global scale. Esprit consistently collaborates with outstanding composers and performs with first-class soloists and ensembles from Canada and abroad. Founding Music Director and Conductor, Alex Pauk was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2015. Through building and sustaining Esprit’s high calibre performances, commissioning program, and innovative programming, Pauk has been a leader in developing and promoting Canadian music at home and abroad.
Evie Mark started throat singing at age 11 and began performing at 18. Her throat singing has taken her around the world sharing her culture, performing with orchestras and with other traditional artists. Raised in the small northern community of Ivujivik, Quebec, she worked hard to learn her ancestral ways and is now renowned for her remarkable abilities in traditional throat singing and storytelling. Akinisie Sivuarapik was born and raised in Puvirnituq, Nunavik in Northern Quebec. As a performer, she is a well-known throat singing and drum dancing artist. Growing up in her community she always had a very special bond learning the cultural values of throat singing with her grandmother.
