Profile)
Soundstreams Canada, established in 1981 by its current and founding Artistic Director, Lawrence Cherney, exists to foster and promote Canadian creation in music and music theatre. It produces three ongoing programs: Encounters '99, pairing significant Canadian composers with international counterparts, will open February 26 with a Choral Spectacular. The Stuttgart Chamber Choir and the Elmer Iseler Singers will combine forces at St. Patrick's Church for a program of Ligeti, Penderecki, Schnittke, Hui and Tremblay. The series will continue with featured composers Tokuhide Niimi (Japan), Pascal Dusapin (France), Kaija Saariaho (Finland), Kelly-Marie Murphy (Canada), and Peter Lieberson (Canada/USA). Music Theatre for Young Audiences will premiere The Mysterious Singing Drum with music by Ray Luedeke and Joseph Ashong and libretto by Ray Luedeke. Northern Encounters '99, a biennial festival of the arts from the circumpolar nations, will celebrate the creation of Nunavut with a four-day program of music, dance and visual arts in July. |
