Scholars Men’s Choral Ensemble
Jerzy Cichocki, Music Director 146 Willowridge Rd., Toronto, ON M9R 3Z7 Tel: 416-761-7776 Website: www.victoriascholars.org The namesake of the Victoria Scholars, Tomás Luis de Victoria, was an outstanding composer of the Renaissance period whose music is renowned for both its spirituality and emotional expressiveness. The essence of the Scholars’ music is an emphasis on the clarity and balance of sound so characteristic of Renaissance music. Their repertoire encompasses medieval plainchant, works from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, contemporary and newly commissioned works. Past winners of the Canada Council Healey Willan Grand Prize in the CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, the Victoria Scholars recently completed successful tours in Nova Scotia and Vancouver. They have performed with many of Canada’s exceptional vocal soloists, and have recorded two of their own widely acclaimed recordings. The Victoria Scholars recently joined the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Arnold Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder, and presented a special joint concert with Canadian composer/organist Denis Bédard at the Toronto Organ Festival 2001. They have scheduled a three Concert Series:
Welcome Christmas (Dec 23); Romancing the Song (Mar 3); and Song of Songs
(June 17).
