The Victoria Scholars, established in January 1993, is a men’s choral ensemble based in Toronto.  The choir takes its name from Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548-1611), one of the outstanding composers of the Renaissance, whose music is renowned for its deep spirituality and emotional expressiveness. The clarity and balance characteristic of Renaissance music form the cornerstone of the Victoria Scholars’ sound, interpreted through the unique sonority of male voices.

In addition to Renaissance music, the Victoria Scholars’ repertoire includes Medieval plain-chant, works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, contemporary pieces in a variety of styles and world premieres of specially commissioned works.

In 1996, the Scholars were awarded the Canada Council Healey Willan Grand Prize at the 11th Biennial CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs. In 1998, they were awarded First Prize in the Equal Voice (Male) category.

The 2000/2001 season includes: Gloria Sunday, Dec. 17, 8 pm, at St. James’ Cathedral; Of Pipes and Men, Sun., March 3; and The Spirit of England, Sun., June 10, both in Etobicoke.  Tickets for all concerts: Adults $22 / Students & Seniors $17.  For information or to order tickets, call (416) 761-7776.
